Return and New Beginning
Alfred Zoller returns to Ludwigsburg from Berlin. He had been seconded to Hirth Flugmotoren as a master mechanic for nine years. On September 1, Alfred Zoller opens his mechanical workshop on Bogenstraße in Ludwigsburg. World War II had ended just under four months earlier. The conditions for getting started are correspondingly difficult. On the one hand, there is a great deal to repair; on the other hand, tools, materials, and machinery are in short supply.
Fountain pens, lighters, fire hoses
Alfred Zoller repairs engines, fire hoses, children’s toys, fountain pens, and whatever else people bring him. He also fixes broken machines. These serve as the basis for manufacturing his own products.
His aluminum lighters, which he manufactures on his lathe, are particularly successful. Over time, American soldiers become his most important customers. They pay for the lighters mainly with cigarettes, peanut butter, or chocolate.

Growth and Change
Alfred Zoller's business is now well established in Ludwigsburg. The small company has grown over the past three years, and new employees have joined the team. The Bogenstraße location has become too cramped. The workshop is relocating to Charlottenstraße.
Tool Holders and Further Development
Word spreads about Zoller’s skills as a mechanic. The company manufactures tool holders for lathes under license, which are sold through several distributors. These are the first tooling solutions in ZOLLER’s history. This gives Alfred Zoller a foothold in the turning tool and lathe industry.
More orders come in from machine manufacturers. Alfred Zoller is tasked with producing sheet metal templates used to adjust turning tools.

A world first: Zoller's setting device for turning tools
Customers suggested that a presetting device for turning tools would significantly improve production. The innovative Swabian company Zoller took up the idea and developed a pantograph for tool setting.
A pantograph is actually a drafting tool. But Zoller knew how to use the mechanism in conjunction with a microscope for tool setting. It was the first device in the world that allowed a machine operator to externally preset all turning tools based on a technical drawing.

Quick Start
Alfred Zoller’s son, Eberhard Zoller, joins the company on April 8. The young mechanical engineer is working at Heidelberger Druck, a specialist in large printing presses. But his father’s health situation requires immediate action. “I felt very much at home at Heidelberger Druck. It was one of the most modern companies in Germany. But I didn’t hesitate for a moment to join my father’s company,” recalls Eberhard Zoller. His first assignment: to further develop the adjustment and measuring device.
Change of Name
As the company’s focus shifted further toward machines and tool holders, it changed its name. At the Hannover Messe trade fair, it presented itself as “ALFRED ZOLLER Maschinen- und Vorrichtungsbau.”

In production

Ahead of the curve: Creating a digital layout sheet with Basic
For Eberhard Zoller, it was only a matter of time before software became increasingly important for manufacturing processes. There was no question that ZOLLER should develop solutions for this. So the ZOLLER CEO quickly taught himself to program in BASIC and presented the first digital setup sheet at the International Hannover Exhibition. Interest was enormous right from the start. Award-winning design, ergonomics, and usability
Eberhard Zoller places particular emphasis on ergonomics, ease of use, and a modular design. For him, these are key features that offer added value and allow ZOLLER to stand out in the market. To this end, he is commissioning the redesign of the V and H machine series. They are intended to meet the aforementioned criteria even more effectively.
ZOLLER equips the series with innovations such as the one-hand operating handle and the continuous fine adjustment. These features make operation significantly more comfortable. For the first time, the company collaborates with an industrial designer. The effort pays off: The machines win the HiF International Industrial Design Award and are honored as “The Best of the Best.”
International expansion boosts sales
International sales activities are on the rise, with annual sales of setting and measuring instruments climbing to 600 units. Branches in France, Austria, and Switzerland are established, along with numerous agencies. Just ten years after its founding, ZOLLER-Austria becomes the market leader in Austria.

Another technological milestone from ZOLLER: For the first time, an electronic PET projector is being used on CNC-controlled setting machines. ZOLLER is thus the first manufacturer worldwide to offer a system that enables reproducible, micrometer-precise measurements regardless of the operator.

To meet the high demands of tool manufacturers and grinding shops, ZOLLER has developed a specialized measuring device that offers exceptional precision and even more capabilities. The first model, the H321S, is being delivered to Walter in Tübingen, just a short distance away in Swabia. Included with the device is the new GeoTool software, which features data transfer to the CNC grinding machine.
The 1992–93 Economic Crisis – Sales Plunge Within Months
However, the enthusiasm is dampened. While FAMETA ’92 is underway, the automotive industry announces that it will lay off tens of thousands of employees. The economic crisis takes hold, with profound effects on ZOLLER. “Up until September, we had an average of about 50 orders per month for setting and measuring devices,” recalls Eberhard Zoller. “By December, that number had dropped to four.”

The hardest decision
During the 1992 Christmas break, Eberhard Zoller had to make one of the hardest decisions of his entire professional career. In 1993, ZOLLER shut down its in-house parts manufacturing. Because production was outsourced, many employees lost their jobs.
Eberhard Zoller: “That was hard on the people and hard on me. We had a modern manufacturing facility operating in two shifts. We could load machines with parts and even let them run unattended at night. That was now over.”
AWV – Patented Image Processing Technology
At the EMO trade fair in Hanover, ZOLLER presents its self-developed and patented AWV image processing technology for the first time. ZOLLER attracts significant international attention because AWV visualizes a tool’s measurement data with outstanding clarity. AWV lays the foundation for industrial metrology using image processing and optics.

KANBAN is coming
The third generation takes the helm at ZOLLER. Eberhard Zoller’s eldest son, Christoph Zoller, joins the ZOLLER team. His first project: optimizing operations by introducing the KANBAN system in the parts warehouse. After visiting the IMTS trade show in Chicago in 1992, Christoph Zoller decided to establish a ZOLLER branch in the U.S. Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan, about 60 kilometers west of the former U.S. auto hub of Detroit. ZOLLER Inc. has grown into a key location and today serves not only customers in the U.S. but also those in Canada and Mexico.

“E-Magix” is the name of the new image processing system for ZOLLER’s manual devices. This makes these setting and measuring devices ready for operator-independent, micrometer-precise measurement. ZOLLER customers with smaller budgets can thus also benefit from automatic image processing.

The Shrinkage Expert: »redomatic«
The first order has come in for a device capable of shrinking and unshrinking tools, as well as measuring and adjusting them. What’s missing is the right solution. On a car trip to visit a customer in Switzerland, Eberhard Zoller and developer Christian Pfau discuss potential technical approaches. The trip to the neighboring country is well worth it. Upon their return, the design is ready—at least in their minds. Along the way, the two sell three »genius units« to Switzerland.
»redomatic«, the new setting and measuring device with inductive shrink technology, is unveiled at the AMB in Stuttgart. This was just the beginning of shrink technology made by ZOLLER. At the IMTS in the U.S., held concurrently, ZOLLER showcases the fully automatic »roboToSet« version and demonstrates how Schunk-TRIBOS polygon clamping technology is combined with V-series setting and measuring devices.

Retirement is off the table
ZOLLER is expanding its management team to include sons Alexander and Christoph Zoller. The plan is for Christoph Zoller to return from the U.S. to play a more active role in Freiberg an der Neiße. Eberhard Zoller is largely stepping back from day-to-day operations, as the senior boss had already gotten himself a dog for retirement. His plan: walking the dog and focusing more on the dog’s needs. But things turn out differently.
Off to China
Christoph Zoller sets off from the USA bound for China and India. After all, growth markets need a ZOLLER branch. No sooner said than done. He opens a location in both Shanghai and Pune. His brother Alexander moves to the USA, takes over the US business, and continues to expand the branch. And Eberhard Zoller? He continues to go to the office—accompanied by his dog.
Measuring in any cutting position
With Zoller »aralon,« it is now possible for the first time to measure crankshaft cutters with internal cutting edges fully automatically in all cutting positions. The measuring device for cutter heads, »zenit«, is supplemented by a portal tailstock with pneumatic clamping of the plunging shafts.

ZOLLER introduces TMS Tool Management Solutions, bridging the gap between digital tool management and measurement data from setting and measuring devices as well as testing machines. Data and data management are converging.
Fast, process-oriented measurement
ZOLLER is launching »pomSkpGo«. It is the first mobile measuring device for measuring cutting edge preparation. With this, ZOLLER combines flexibility and high precision in a single device. It marks the beginning of a line of devices designed for process-oriented measurement. They are intended for fast, precise manual measurements at the receiving dock or for tool checks right next to the grinding machine.
Portfolio Expands with Specialized Applications
Also new: Six top specialists for specific tool types. For measurements on gear hobs, customers can now rely on »hobCheck« and »pomZenit«. Those who want to measure saw blades rely on »sawCheck«; »millCheck« is used for measuring face cutter heads, »pomZenit« for corner cutter heads, and »hobCheck800« for measuring indexable insert-equipped hobbing cutters.
For customers in the engine manufacturing sector, ZOLLER is adapting its superior measurement technology for the measurement and alignment of crankshaft cutters. The solutions are called »eQick200« and »eQuick 300«.
The needs of the tool and mold making industries are also coming into sharper focus. ZOLLER is implementing »smile EDM« and developing a special module for it that includes an electronic probe as well as software with a graphical user interface and additional calculation methods.

The limits of what is technologically possible: »titanium«
The »titan« measuring and testing machine expands the »genius« series. This machine is a fully automatic, high-end solution with up to 7 CNC axes for µm-precise inspection of precision tools, including cutting edge preparation. »titan« is a measuring giant weighing up to 1,400 kilograms. One that stoically performs its precision work right in the middle of production.
The Reamer Expert
In addition to its comprehensive solutions for setting and measuring reamers using image processing, ZOLLER equips the »reamCheck« device with an electronic dual-probe.
ZOLLER in the UK and Indonesia
In December, ZOLLER establishes its subsidiary in the United Kingdom. The ZOLLER UK team is now based in the tranquil town of Foston in the county of Derbyshire. This is located almost in the center of the Birmingham–Sheffield–Manchester triangle. In the same year, ZOLLER opens an office in Indonesia.
By the end of the year, the global total of sold setting and measuring devices climbs to over 30,000.

New additions to the measuring machines
The »threadCheck« measuring machine rounds out the inspection portfolio with automatic measurement and testing of threading tools.
The new »3dCheck« device is based on »genius« but offers additional features. It follows the growing trend toward digital twins of tools and the digitization of workpieces. This six-axis measuring machine not only performs precise tool inspection but also creates, for example, a 3D digital model of a tool.
The »edgeControl« measuring machine specializes in detecting signs of wear and non-contact detection of even the smallest chips on the cutting edge.
Additional devices for in-process measurement
The POM series is being expanded with three new additions. For in-process measurement of standard and micro tools, ZOLLER is introducing the new universal devices »pomBasic« and »pomBasic micro« to its customers. With »pomDiaCheck«, a special device for in-process use is entering the market, capable of measuring the diameter of cylindrical blanks as well as drilling and reaming tools with an accuracy of less than 1 µm.
CNC technology for »redomatic«
The combined device for length-precise shrinking, setting, and measuring of shrink-fit tools now operates fully automatically. Except for inserting the components and removing the finished complete tool, the operator assumes the role of an observer.

ZOLLER implements DIN EN ISO 17025 and is recertified in quality management according to ISO 9001:2008, VDA 6.4:2005, and the environmental management system ISO 14001:2004.

Greater Efficiency for Tool Manufacturers Through Automation
At the GrindTec trade show in Augsburg, ZOLLER will demonstrate how tool manufacturers and grinding shops can automate tool inspection. »roboSet 1« handles all tool-handling processes for the »genius« universal measuring machine. Entire tool batches are inspected fully automatically, and the results are documented.
Also new: solutions for the fully automated measurement of special drill geometries and types such as KENtip, as well as software for measuring grinding wheels.
Seamless, automated data transfer
Manually entering tool data is a thing of the past. At EMO in Milan, ZOLLER is unveiling »zidCode« for the first time. This new ZOLLER solution transmits tool data directly, error-free, and in a format compatible with the CNC machine’s control system. Simply scan the code on the tool.
For ZOLLER, zidCode is a major innovation, as it enables the entire CAM-to-part process to be carried out digitally from now on.

The proven setting and measuring devices in the »smile« and »venturion« series have been redesigned. Even greater precision, even simpler operation, even greater convenience. It hardly matters anymore whether a skilled technician or a semi-skilled worker is operating a »smile« or »venturion«.

Precise analysis of the tool surface
The »mµFocus« in-process inspection system allows tool manufacturers to examine the surface roughness at the cutting edge in great detail—without making contact. With its high-resolution optical system and »pilot«’s superior image processing, »mµFocus« generates color-coded images that reveal even the smallest nicks and scratches.
Tool Management Hardware Expands Tool Administration
Many ZOLLER customers already use TMS Tool Management Solutions, the modular software for tool and tool data management. Headquarters in Ann Arbor, new building in Japan
After more than 20 years of market development in the U.S., ZOLLER Inc., ZOLLER’s U.S. subsidiary, moves into its newly constructed headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan. With this move, Alexander Zoller lays the foundation for ZOLLER’s new design in the construction industry. The large and fully equipped showroom quickly becomes a hub for customer meetings, training sessions, presentations, in-house events, and the company’s success in the U.S.
ZOLLER is also strengthening its presence in Japan. The company moves into its own building.
New automation for models in the »genius« family
After just five years, the successor to »roboSet 1« arrives. With »roboSet 2,« ZOLLER integrates a cleaning and marking station into the automation solution for »genius«. This allows even more essential process steps in tool inspection and documentation to run unmanned.
Automation for tools with collet chucks
For automatic measurement and adjustment, including for collet chucks, Zoller develops another world first: »torqueMatic«. The adjustment and measuring device can automatically loosen the clamping nut and retighten it after adjustment with torque monitoring.
Supplemented by a screwing station with torque monitoring, »the venturion 450« becomes the new »screwMatic«. This enables the automatic loosening and tightening of Schunk TENDO-type hydro-expansion chucks.

New building featuring a smart factory and academy
With the expansion of its headquarters in Pleidelsheim, ZOLLER is opening a new chapter. A customer center is being built that will house development, assembly, shipping, and administration. The ZOLLER Academy will occupy modern and spacious facilities in the new buildings. At the heart of it all is the Smart Factory, where ZOLLER will be able to showcase its connected solutions for Industry 4.0 for the first time.
First-class software made even better
The »pilot 3.0« machine software, with its outstanding image processing, is regarded as the global benchmark. Nevertheless, ZOLLER has set itself the goal of making what has already proven itself even better. The successor, »pilot 4.0«, introduces a new interface modeled after smartphones and tablets. The user-friendly operating concept of »pilot 3.0« remains intact. However, users now have the option to customize their work environment and access it on any ZOLLER device. »pilot 4.0« offers maximum convenience, high user-friendliness, and even simpler operation.
New machine platform and new design
All ZOLLER tool measuring machines in the »genius« series are being moved to a new platform and redesigned from the ground up. In addition to state-of-the-art technology, unique ergonomics, and vibration decoupling, »genius«, »threadCheck«, »edgeControl«, »3dCheck,« and »titan« now feature a new design.
Expansion for shrink technology and even greater convenience in data handling
The shrink-fitting product line is being expanded with the »redomatic mst«, adding another technology to the range.
With »zidCode 4.0«, an addition to »zidCode« is coming to market. »zidCode 4.0« operates fully networked and bidirectionally. It can retrieve data from the central z.One database and transfer it to the CNC machine’s control system, but also write updated data—such as tool life—back to the database.
New facility in China
Sixteen years after Christoph Zoller launched the China business, ZOLLER opens its new building for the Chinese subsidiary. A milestone on a long but successful journey in international business.

The new generation of tool holders – with »idChip«
What began back in 1948 with holders for turning tools is being revived after 73 years: »tooling«. With first-class tool holders “Made in Germany” and clever accessories, customers worldwide now also receive clamping devices in the familiar ZOLLER quality.
The equally new »idChip« makes the tool holders immediately ready for tool management with ZOLLER. The coded plastic chip is integrated into the tool holders and makes them uniquely identifiable. However, the costs are far lower than those for RFID transponders.

The new measuring machine
Welcome to »threadCheck I cc«. Among other things, the new measuring machine measures threading tools for the first time in a fully enclosed and vibration-isolated unit. Even greater precision for the metrological differentiation of critical details. The integrated, CNC-controlled tailstock can be loaded automatically.
Secure tool storage
The »toolOrganizer« tool cabinet now offers an additional option: »smartCompartments«. These compartment locks, developed by ZOLLER, expand the already high functionality of the tool management hardware.
For stone and wood
With the »smile gbo« and new large-screen optics, ZOLLER enables its customers to quickly measure complex geometries on stone and woodworking tools in a single step.

Comprehensive maintenance of »pom« models
ZOLLER is fundamentally revamping its successful line of process-oriented inspection systems», pomBasic«. New models are being added: »pomBasic Compact« and »pomBasic MTI«.
This represents a huge leap forward, particularly for the field of microtools up to D=0.1 mm. Special optics and software functions make microscopically small geometries visible and measurable. Fully automatic measurement of these geometries also becomes a reality with »3dCheck micro«.
Focus on Wear Testing
ZOLLER is intensifying its focus on the complex topic of wear. Development of »edgeControl« is progressing rapidly. The ZOLLER development team is creating software optimized for wear testing.
Automation in the Parts Warehouse
In early January, during its 80th anniversary year, ZOLLER continues to look toward the future. At the assembly plant in Pleidelsheim, the automated small-parts warehouse goes into operation in the second calendar week. The system automatically manages more than 18,000 parts and dispenses what is needed to the assembly line. “This is a milestone for the company. Even at 80, we remain committed to constantly modernizing and keeping pace with change,” says Eberhard Zoller.
